Circus Arts: 2017 Smithsonian Folklife Festival

For the 50th Anniversary of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival we took visitors behind the scenes of Circus Arts. For 10 days on the National Mall 10 venues simultaneously operated and welcomed over 750,000 guests. The program featured intimate workshops, full-scale performances and an interactive circus school where visitors could meet and learn from master artists.

 

Catalonia & Armenia: 2018 Smithsonian Folklife Festival

The 2018 Smithsonian Folklife Festival focuses on the creative cultures of Catalonia and Armenia. In addition to the regular programming of the festival several large scale concerts took place on the National Mall over the two weeks. Several satellite special events were also programmed at the Kennedy Center, the Capitol Building, the Smithsonian Arts & Industries Building and the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Freedom Sounds: A Community Celebration - Grand Opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture

In September 2016 the National Museum of African American History and Culture opened it’s doors to the public for the first time celebrating with a 3 day music festival featuring Public Enemy, The Roots, Living Colour, Stax Music Academy. It focused on highlighting music traditions such as jazz, R&B, gospel, folk, classical, New Orleans brass band, Afro-Latin jazz and hip-hop. In addition to performances the opening ceremony took place on museum grounds and was hosted by President Obama.

IlluminAsia: A Festival of Asian Art, Food, and Cultures

To celebrate the re-opening of Smithsonian’s Freer-Sackler museum the IlluminAsia festival transformed the museums’ grounds with an Asian food market, interactive cooking and art demonstrations, live music by members of the Silkroad Ensemble, and creations by local and international artists. Inside, visitors experienced the reimagined galleries and innovative exhibitions, as well as performances, conversations, and other immersive activities.
